Navigating theideamechanic

I’ve made theideamechanic site pretty simple to get around.

Sometimes though, when you’re navigating in unfamiliar waters, having a map and a guide can help you from getting lost or running aground. So tighten your mainsheet, drop the centerboard, and get ready to set sail!

Here are five tips for getting around theideamechanic site:

Main navigation bar

Navigation header

At the top of the page is the navigation bar, you can’t miss it.

Each of the seven buttons will take you to a different page on theideamechanic site. A graphic on the button gives you a clue of what to expect on the page. Hover your mouse pointer over the button and a short description will pop up.

These seven buttons are divided into three groups: Learn how, Get help, and About us.

In the graphic above you’ll see I’ve hovered over the Learn how text hint. This highlights the first four buttons and gives a description of the topic for those four pages. The Home, Ideas, Follow, and Toolbox buttons are the heart of theideamechanic site – helping you learn how to sell.

The next text hint, Get help, describes the next two buttons: theideamechanic page tells you a little about me, and the Contact page tells you how to contact the Idea Mechanics and where our shop is located.

The last text hint, About us, highlights the last button. The Idea Mechanics button takes you to a page describing our products and services, shares examples of our work and success stories, and lists our general service rates.

At the bottom of the page you’ll find a second navigation bar. There’s not much to say about this one, it’s a text version of the main navigation bar at the top of the page. I put it here just in case you don’t want to scroll to the top of the page. And as Forest Gump would say “… and that’s all I have to say about that.”

Follow the yellow brick road

Follow the yellow brick road

Have you ever visited a website and wondered “Just WHERE should I start!?” I have, that’s why I’d suggest you follow the yellow brick road. The yellow brick road is a list of ten posts that will help you get started. In fact, I’ll bet you’re here because you already started following it!

Oh, one thought before we tack to the next channel buoy: at the bottom of each post are “Previous/Next” links to the remaining articles. Just keep reading and clicking Next … you’ll find yourself in the presence of the great Oz in no time at all.

Category lists & search engines

Categories & posts

The Ideas button on the navigation bar will take you to a page where you should be able to find anything on theideamechanic site. In the categories and posts section of the page I’ve listed all of the categories for theideamechanic posts and created jump menus to take you to any post in each category.

If you’re looking for something specific, I’ve included two search engines. The Relevanssi search engine is a pretty cool, localized, fuzzy match search engine. You can read more about it here. As a second resource, I’ve included the Google custom search engine. You can read more about this engine here.

If you don’t want to browse using the categories and posts tool, you can go to a sitedump page that will give you a link to every post on theideamechanic site. Some posts are in multiple categories, so they’ll show up on this page more than once. Posts are listed under their categories, have their publish date listed, and indicate how many comments for each post.

. . . . .

There you go. Simple, eh? … and you didn’t get lost. Congratulations, you’re now a bonafide sea captain! Now let’s learn more about why you’re really here, to learn a better way of selling. Read the next post.
