You probably already figured that the length constraint on individual text messages had something to do with early bandwidth limitations, but why 160 characters? Turns out it’s largely because in 1985, a German fellow named Friedhelm Hillebrand sat down and started typing out random sentences and questions and found that almost all of them came in under 160 characters.
