Section 5 of 81 guide

Selling

Turning interest into sales through stores, marketplaces, sales calls and the checkout, for readers with something to sell.

Fig. 1The bell rings when someone’s at the counter. Selling is everything between that ring and the bag going out the door.

Selling is where interest turns into money, and where a good share of it leaks out. A marketplace brings the buyers and takes a cut of each sale; your own store keeps the cut and leaves the buyers to you. Card fees take roughly 3% either way. Services sell on calls and proposals, products on the page and the checkout, and both on what happens after the sale.

Etsy vs Shopify puts the marketplace against your own store: one $48 sale worked through each one’s fee pages, where the buyers come from, and which to start on with a first product.
